Cash Drawer

If you take cash during your shift, SSP Waiter keeps track of your cash drawer: the float you start with, the cash you take, and the count at the end. Your manager sees the results in SSP Manager.

Overview

  • 💵 Open your drawer with a counted float when you clock in
  • 🧮 See the change due on every cash payment
  • 🤝 Hand your drawer to a colleague mid-shift
  • 🔢 Count and close your drawer before you clock out
Do I have a drawer?

Your location decides how cash is kept. With server banking you keep your own cash for the shift. With a shared till, whoever opens the till drawer is responsible for it. Either way, the drawer is yours from the moment you open it until you close it or hand it over.

Opening your drawer

When you clock in (Settings → Clock In) and your role handles cash, SSP Waiter asks for your opening float.

  1. The location's standard float is filled in.
  2. Count what you actually have. Tap Count by denomination to enter bills and coins, or type the total.
  3. Tap Open drawer.

You can also open it later from Settings → Cash Drawer. If you try to take a cash payment without an open drawer, SSP Waiter offers to open one first.

Taking a cash payment

  1. On the order, tap Pay and choose Cash.
  2. Enter the amount the guest handed you, or tap a quick button ($20, $50, $100, Exact).
  3. SSP Waiter shows the change due in large type.
  4. Tap Record payment and give the guest their change.

Example:

  • Order total: $47.50
  • Guest gives: $60.00
  • Change due: $12.50

The payment counts toward your open drawer. A cash refund taken from your drawer counts against it.

Handing over your drawer

If a colleague takes over your drawer (for example at a shift change on a shared till):

  1. Go to Settings → Cash Drawer and tap Hand over.
  2. Count the drawer together and enter the count.
  3. Your colleague confirms and becomes responsible for the drawer from that moment.

Closing your drawer

At the end of your shift:

  1. Go to Settings → Cash Drawer and tap Close drawer.
  2. Count everything in the drawer, by denomination or as a total.
  3. Add a note if something happened, for example "gave a refund of $8 at table 5".
  4. Tap Submit count.

You'll see "Count submitted. A manager will review it." Your location may keep counts blind, in which case you won't see the expected amount or the difference. That's normal: it keeps everyone's count honest. Managers always see both.

Clocking out

You can't clock out while your drawer is open. Close it or hand it over first, then clock out as usual.

If you have to leave without closing it, tell your manager. They can close it in SSP Manager.

On a shared tablet (PIN sign-in)

When you've switched to yourself with your PIN on a shared tablet, you can still open, close and hand over your own drawer and take cash payments. Signing off on a variance and closing someone else's drawer are done by a manager in SSP Manager.

Tips

✅ Count your float before you open, not after the first table ✅ Keep cash for each table separate until the payment is recorded ✅ Count the change back to the guest ✅ Note anything unusual when you close; it saves questions later
