Allergies

SSP Waiter shows what each dish contains while you ring it in, records the allergies a table tells you about, and checks every dish on the order against them. A dish that contains a declared allergen cannot go to the kitchen until someone decides what to do with it.

What a dish contains is entered by the restaurant in SSP Manager — see Allergens & Dietary Info. The allergen names come from SSP.

Allergens on the menu

Each item tile carries small badges, every one with its words — never just a colour:

BadgeMeaning
Red PeanutContains peanut
Dashed may: SesameMay contain sesame (cross-contact)
Amber Allergens not setNobody has reviewed this dish. Ask the kitchen — it is not "no allergens".
Grey No listed allergensThe restaurant declared it contains none of the 13 priority allergens
Green Vegan, Halal…Dietary tags
Spice: HotSpice level (a tile shows it only when the dish is spicy)
640 calCalories per serving

Opening a dish's options spells it out: Allergens not set: ask the kitchen, and under each option what it adds, e.g. contains Peanut · +120 cal.

At the bottom of the order screen, the location's allergen notice is your prompt: Ask about allergies. followed by the restaurant's disclaimer.

Recording a guest's allergy

On an order with no allergy yet, tap the red-outlined Allergy button at the top of the order lines.

Allergy on this order — What did the table tell you? The kitchen and every line on the order are checked against it.

  1. Allergens — tap each one the guest named.
  2. Note (optional) — anything else, up to 280 characters: Peanut allergy, carries an EpiPen. A note on its own is enough when the allergy is not on the list.
  3. How strong (optional) — Preference, Allergy or Severe. This is for information: it never switches a check off.
  4. Add allergy.

You need at least one allergen or a note. Every line already on the order is checked at once, and so is every dish added later.

The red banner

Once an order has an allergy, a red Allergy on this order banner sits on top of the order lines. Each declaration shows its allergens (or See note), the severity, the note, and who recorded it and when — Guest · 7:42 PM or Waiter Sam · 7:42 PM. Add records another.

On the tables screen, a table whose open order carries an allergy wears a red Allergy badge — Guest allergy when the guest declared it from their own phone, which means nobody on the floor has heard it yet. Go and talk to them.

Revoking an allergy

Tap Revoke beside a declaration, then Revoke again to confirm (or Cancel). Use it only when the guest corrects themselves. To change an allergy, revoke it and add the right one. The revoked declaration stays in the order's record in SSP Manager; any conflict it raised closes.

When a dish contains a declared allergen

Each line on the order says what it means for the allergy:

On the lineWhat it meansBlocks Send?
Red Contains Peanut — decide before sendingThe dish, or an option chosen on it, contains a declared allergenYes
Contains Peanut — kept anywaySomeone decided to keep itNo
Amber May contain SesameCross-contact riskNo — a warning only
Amber Allergens not reviewed — ask the kitchenNobody has reviewed this dish, so nobody knowsNo — a warning only

Lines only carry these warnings on an order that has an allergy.

The allergy check

Send and Fire are refused while any contains conflict is undecided. Instead of an error, the Allergy check before sending sheet opens, listing each undecided dish with what it contains. The banner's Review n conflicts button opens it too.

For each dish:

  • Keep anyway — the guest knows and still wants it. Recorded as your decision, with your name and the time.
  • Remove dish — takes the line off the order. Offered only while the dish can still be changed (nothing sent yet).

A dish the kitchen already has can't be removed from here: the sheet says The kitchen already has this dish: to take it off, cancel it from the order.

Below, Warnings (no decision needed) lists the may contain dishes.

Once every conflict is decided the sheet says Every allergy conflict is decided. You can send the order now. — tap Done, then Send. If SSP cannot confirm the check (for example a lost connection), it says Nothing was sent. Check again before sending. with Retry; it never tells you to send without proof.

Firing a course from the orders list works the same way: a refused fire opens the order with its allergy check.

Why Send waits

A dish that contains what the guest is allergic to must be a decision someone made — the guest, through you — not something that slipped past. May contain and not reviewed dishes are warnings because there is nothing to decide that the guest has not already been told; they never hold the order.

New rounds on a paid check

When you add items to a check that is already paid, SSP opens a new check for the round (Added to new check …) and takes you to it. Allergies are declared for the whole visit, so the ones recorded earlier carry over: they appear in the new check's banner marked From check code, and the new dishes are checked against them.

The kitchen's acknowledgement

Coming soon

The banner will show whether the kitchen has seen the allergy: ✓ Kitchen acknowledged (Station · name · time) for each station that has, and Waiting for station for any that has not. Until then, ask the kitchen. Where the location requires it, the kitchen screen already holds the ticket until its stations acknowledge — see Allergies on the kitchen screen.
